Below are the board position descriptions. All positions are open for running. Each board position term is one year. You do not need to be present at the Anniversary Party to run or be nominated, but only Active Fermenta Members can vote at the Anniversary Party.

Fermenta Board of Directors Position Descriptions



        The Fermenta President works directly with all Board members. Daily duties include answering emails, scheduling board meetings, monitoring social media, and ensuring events are in place. The President is the main point person for all major Fermenta events and assists in delegating responsibilities to other members as needed/based on members’ skills and interests.  Furthermore, the President is expected to be present at as many Fermenta events as possible.


  • Schedule and run monthly Board meetings/conference calls
  • Answer emails from interested or current Fermenta members/interested parties
  • Work with media and answer questions, do interviews, or delegate to other Board Members
  • Help coordinate events, ensure details are in place
  • Check and monitor the website
    • Make sure all events are posted and updated
    • Make sure all pages on website are working and updated
  • Actively seek out new venues or think of new ideas for Fermenta educational events

Vice President


        The Vice President assists the President in performing the above or other specified duties. She acts as President in the absence or disability of the President, performing the above or other specified duties. 


  • Monthly Board Meetings via in person or conference call
  • Assists the President in the above or other specified duties
  • Acts as the President in the absence or disability of the President, performing the above or other specified duties
  • Frequently assigned to special areas of responsibility, such as membership, media, annual meeting, elections, legal filings, etc.
  • Currently oversees the Elections Committee



        The Treasurer is the officer assigned the primary responsibility of overseeing the management and reporting of Fermenta’s finances. The Treasurer works with all Board members on a regular basis. There are frequent communications during each month to discuss events, meetings, and ongoing issues with other Board members. The Treasurer has sole responsibility for preparing all financial documents on a timely basis, distributing these documents to the Board members, and maintaining adequate copies and backups of all financial data. The Treasurer should be financially literate, pay close attention to detail, be timely in completing tasks, keep neat and accurate records.


  • Attend monthly Board meetings via in person or conference call
  • Perform Monthly Financial tasks:
    • Bank account maintenance
    • Track receipts for expenditures
    • Determine monthly scholarship amount
    • Oversee that donations are accounted for and tracked correctly
    • Track/calculate monthly fees
    • Prepare, store, and distribute the monthly financial statement using QuickBooks
    • Submit the 990 form on an annual basis to the Internal Revenue Service
    • Submit the Michigan Non Profit filing on an annual basis to the State of Michigan
    • Create yearly financial statement using QuickBooks
    • Maintain a cash box for events
    • Assist where and when needed with events
    • Attend monthly board meetings
    • Attend a majority of Fermenta sponsored events



        The Secretary keeps a log of monthly Board meeting minutes and uploads them into the Fermenta Google Drive. The Secretary assists in planning events, if needed, and attends as many events as possible. The Secretary will moderate the membership forum and take on other tasks as needed.

  • Send membership cards and welcome letters to people who sign up for membership online
  • Assist in website updating (if tech savvy and interested in doing that)
  • Assist in the planning of monthly events if needed
  • Attend monthly events
  • Moderate membership forum


Board Directors at Large

       Director at Large for Communications& Outreach:

Responsibilities include communications activities that promote, enhance, and protect the organization’s brand reputation, such as social media, relationships with the media, visual advertising development, and any additional projects that spread awareness of Fermenta to the public. For 2019 this Director at Large position will be responsible for the Fermenta Jobs Board.


  • Attend monthly Board Meetings via in person or conference call
  • Works closely with the President to promote events
    • Sends out or organizes the monthly newsletter
    • Creates Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram posts on a regular basis
    • Creates event posts to advertise and promote events
  • Handles the creation and ordering of promotional products
  • Manages the Jobs Board
  • Acts as media contact for press releases or interviews
  • Attends as many events as a supporting Fermenta board member
  • Serves as media back up person to the President


    Director at Large for Scholarships and Education:

Primary responsibility is to chair the Scholarship Committee which seeks to find, promote, offer and award a variety of educational scholarships.  This Director will coordinate such educational opportunities with the President and the Director at Large in charge of communication. Meetings of the Scholarship Committee are on an as-needed basis. Other responsibilities may include taking part in the planning, promoting and organization of any Fermenta educational event.


  •       Attend monthly Board Meetings in person or via conference call
  •        Seek out new educational opportunities for members
  •       Call Scholarship Committee meetings as needed
  •       Administer scholarship offerings
  •      Write scholarship description/Monitor applications
  •      Coordinate with Board to get it published
  •      Check applicant qualifications and verify membership
  •      Send out voting materials to Scholarship Committee via google docs
  •      Award scholarships and notify non-winning applicants/ Communicate with scholarship recipients
  •     Keep records of scholarships awarded, receipts & winners 
  •      Stay within the Scholarship budget
  •      Submit copies of receipts to the Treasurer in a timely manner
  •      Make sure Scholarship table is presented at Fermenta Anniversary Party
