Below are the board position descriptions. All positions are open for running. Next to each description indicates whether or not the current board member holding the position is re-running. You do not need to be present at the Anniversary Party to run or be nominated, but only Active Fermenta Members can vote at the Anniversary Party.

Fermenta Board of Directors Position Descriptions



        The Fermenta President works directly with all Executive Board members on a weekly basis. The average amount of time per week is 3-5 hrs and requires at least small attention almost every day.  Daily duties include answering emails, monitoring social media, touching base with the Events Coordinator and ensuring events are in place. Along with the Events Coordinator, the President is the main point person for all major Fermenta events and assists in delegating responsibilities to other members as needed/based on members’ skills and interests.  Furthermore, the President is expected to be present at as many quarterly Fermenta events as possible; one’s presence at smaller events (ex. collaboration brew days) is strongly encouraged whenever possible.  


  • Schedule and run monthly Board meetings/conference calls
  • Answer emails from interested or current Fermenta members
  • Work with media and answer questions, do interviews, or send to Communications Director
  • Work directly with Events Coordinator to coordinate monthly events, ensure details are in place
  • Work directly with Communications Director to make sure posters are created for events and social media posts are taken care of for event promotion
  • Currently oversees the Scholarship committee to find scholarships, price out options, work within a budget, monitor applications, choose winners
  • Check and monitor the website
    • Make sure all events are posted and updated
    • Make sure all pages on website are working and updated
  • Actively seek out new venues or think of new ideas for quarterly Fermenta events

Time: 12 hours/month



Vice President


        The Vice President assists the President in performing the above or other specified duties. She acts as President in the absence or disability of the President, performing the above or other specified duties. She is generally considered the president-elect once the current President no longer serves in that capacity.

  • Assists the President in the above or other specified duties
  • Acts as the President in the absence or disability of the President, performing the above or other specified duties
  • Frequently assigned to special areas of responsibility, such as membership, media, annual meeting, elections, legal filings, etc.
  • Currently oversees the Elections Committee

Time: 8 hours/month  




        The Treasurer is the officer assigned the primary responsibility of overseeing the management and reporting of Fermenta’s finances. The Treasurer works with all Executive Board members on a regular basis. The average amount of time per week is about 1 hour, depending on the time of year.  There is frequent communications during each month to discuss events, meetings, and ongoing issues with other Executive Board members. The Treasurer has sole responsibility for preparing all financial documents on a timely basis, distributing these documents to the Executive Board members, and maintaining adequate copies and backups of all financial data. Therefore, the Treasurer should be financially literate, pay close attention to detail, be timely in completing tasks, keep neat and accurate records, and show a willingness to ask questions.

  • Perform Monthly Financial tasks:
    • Bank account maintenance
    • Track receipts for expenditures
    • Determine monthly scholarship amount
    • Oversee that donations are accounted for and tracked correctly
    • Track/calculate monthly fees
    • Prepare, store, and distribute the monthly financial statement using QuickBooks
    • Submit the 990-N on an annual basis to the Internal Revenue Service
    • Submit the Michigan Non Profit filing on an annual basis to the State of Michigan
    • Create yearly financial statement using QuickBooks
    • Maintain a cash box for events
    • Assist where and when needed with events
    • Attend monthly board meetings
    • Attend a majority of Fermenta sponsored events

Time:  5-8 hours/month






        The Secretary keeps a log of monthly Board meeting minutes and uploads them into the Fermenta Google Drive. The Secretary assists in planning monthly events, if needed, and attends as many quarterly events as possible. The Secretary helps with membership and oversees the Membership Committee. Time commitment is about 2 hours a week.


  • Attend monthly Board Meetings via in person or conference call
  • Take notes at Executive Board Meetings and uploads them into the Google Drive
  • Send membership cards and welcome letters to people who sign up for membership online
  • Assist in website updating (if tech savvy and interested in doing that)
  • Assist in the planning of monthly events if needed
  • Attend monthly events

Time: 5-8 hours/month


Communications Director


        The Communications Director is the lead director for communications oversight of Fermenta. This includes communications activities that promote, enhance, and protect the organization’s brand reputation, such as social media, relationships with the media, visual advertising development, and any additional projects that spread awareness of Fermenta to the public. Time commitment is about 2 hours a week.


  • Attend monthly Board Meetings via in person or conference call
  • Works closely with the President and Events Coordinator to promote quarterly events
    • Sends out or organizes the monthly newsletter
    • Monitors social media and creates Twitter and Facebook posts on a regular basis or coordinates with a communications volunteer to post
    • Creates event posts to advertise and promote quarterly events
  • Handles the creation and ordering of promotional products
  • Acts as media contact for press releases or interviews
  • Attends as many quarterly events as a supporting Fermenta board member
  • Serves as media back up person to the President

Time: About 5-8 hours/month


Events Coordinator


        The Events Coordinator is the lead director for oversight of Fermenta events. The Events Coordinator shall be the primary contact person for all Fermenta events, involved in creating, organizing, promoting, and implementing event details. She is responsible for delegating and overseeing responsibilities for each event. Time commitment is 2-3 hours a week depending on the month and event.


  • Attend monthly Board Meetings via in person or conference call
  • Creating ideas for events that involve Fermenta’s objectives of education, camaraderie, networking, and education
  • Contacting owners/managers of establishments to start the process of organizing an event in a suitable establishment
  • Meeting with owners/managers of establishments to organize details of event. If unable to meet in person, then organizing conference calls, Skype sessions etc.
  • Requesting that the owner/manager of the establishment that is hosting the event consider donating some proceeds of the event to Fermenta’s scholarship fund
  • Instigating and organizing all aspects of the event
  • Coordinating with our President and Communications Director concerning marketing the event
  • Appointing and guiding sub-committees to help with all aspects of events if needed
  • Attending the event to represent Fermenta and ensure that all is running smoothly, including set-up and breakdown
  • Appointing a proxy if unable to attend the event
  • Thanking the establishment after the event
  • Liaising with the Fermenta board on all the above via email and/or phone

Time:12 hours/month (fluctuates based on event)
